There Is No Single Perfect Posture
Why movement variation, work design and physical capacity matter more than rigidly “sitting straight.”

Ergonomics matters, but discomfort at work rarely comes from one chair angle alone. People differ in body dimensions, prior symptoms, workload, recovery, visual demands and tolerance for sustained positions. A workstation should fit the worker, yet even a well-adjusted setup cannot replace regular movement and adequate physical capacity.
Think “next posture,” not “perfect posture”
Any position can become uncomfortable when it is held long enough. Alternating between sitting, standing and brief walking changes tissue loading and gives the visual and nervous systems a break. Small adjustments—screen height, keyboard distance, foot support and chair depth—can reduce unnecessary effort, but movement variation remains central.
What workplace programs should include
- A task-specific workstation review rather than generic measurements.
- Short, frequent movement opportunities that fit the workflow.
- Progressive strengthening or conditioning for symptomatic workers when appropriate.
- Education that avoids fear-based messages about normal spinal positions.
- Review of workload, schedule, sleep and recovery when relevant.
Research on office interventions suggests that exercise—particularly strengthening for symptomatic workers—can be useful. Ergonomic changes may help, but equipment alone does not consistently solve neck or upper-quarter pain. The stronger approach combines environment, behavior and capacity.
When to seek an evaluation
Persistent pain, weakness, numbness, headaches, symptoms that travel into an arm, or difficulty performing usual work deserve individualized assessment. The goal is to understand the pattern and create a plan—not to blame posture.
